Over the past year, Google has been steadily integrating Material 3 Expressive features into Android and its suite of applications. While some alterations represent significant overhauls, others are merely slight tweaks in color schemes or icon designs. The Google Play Store has now joined the ranks of applications receiving these subtle enhancements, as users begin to notice new and more vibrant download and loading animations appearing.
One user, known as FeDeveloper95 on Telegram, has shared screenshots demonstrating these new features live from their Play Store. Instead of the traditional circular progress indicators for downloads, users will now observe crinkled rings surrounding the app icons during downloads. Furthermore, there’s a fresh loading indicator that animates when accessing the Downloads page, which aligns perfectly with Google's updated, more dynamic design aesthetic.
These updates were anticipated. Back in October, our analysis of the APK (application package) revealed the expressive loading indicator in a test phase. Now, it seems this feature has progressed from testing to a gradual rollout, and you can check out the demonstration in the video provided below.
As of now, we haven't encountered these new features on our devices, but it appears that FeDeveloper95 isn't the only one experiencing this change. Another user, Ishan Wankhade, also posted a screenshot on Threads showcasing the same animated progress rings while multiple apps were updating. While this update may not constitute a major visual transformation, it certainly adds an engaging touch to the user experience.
If you are refreshing your Play Store but have yet to see any of these changes, there's no need to be concerned. Early indications suggest that this is indeed a staggered rollout, which can often extend over several weeks or even months, following Google's usual practices.
